The Importance of 'Me Time '
Hey there,
Have you noticed what the
priorities of teenagers are these days? Do you know what makes them happy? Maybe
you have guessed it. Yes, it is the amount of likes and comments gained on
social media platform. This seems pretty normal right! Yes, this has become the
new culture.
Now a days our life and
happiness is governed by the amount of attention we attract from others, be it
on social media platforms or in real life.
I have grown up in a
school (boarding) that prohibited the use of electronic gadgets. This
stimulated the creative portion of our brain and deserves a whole article
dedicated to it. I am truly grateful to the school for enforcing such
norms. It also encouraged us to take a moment and reflect upon ourselves. This
motivated me to dedicate some time of my day to myself, which is popularly
known as ‘Me Time’
What is ‘Me Time’?
‘Time spent relaxing
on one's own as opposed to working or doing things for others, seen as an opportunity to reduce stress or restore energy’
This is how Google defines it. I would like to add a few more
sentences to it. It is a time which you devote to yourself. A time where you
are away from the influence of social media. Away from the ‘what will people
think, what will people say’. It’s a time to reflect on your actions and to be
grateful for what you value.
How I Spend My ‘Me Time’
First of all I make sure
I devote an hour of the day to
myself. During this time I make sure my phone is switched off and no one
disturbs me. I meditate for sometime as it helps me achieve presence of mind.
Then I reflect upon the activities I have done during the day(or the previous day). I critically analyze
my behavior towards other people and myself.
This time doesn’t always has to be that intense. Some sometimes I just go for a walk alone or simply read
my favorite books. What is important here is to spend some time as ‘ME’ not as
a student, a daughter or a friend.
How I Have Benefited
From This
By spending time with myself I have learnt a
lot of things about me. It has helped me to grow emotionally. I have become a
more sensitive person. I have also
learnt that by understanding yourself, you start understanding other people
better. Your knowledge on the human nature increases. All this makes one more sensitive to other’s
needs and actions.
Spending time with
myself has also helped me be capable of not being greatly influenced by other
people’s opinions and to always question myself.
This has also helped me
remain happy and positive because I have learnt to valve my existence and I
believe I can achieve my dreams.
It sure is a great feeling
to know that you matter.
Conclusion
I would recommend
everyone to practice this. It is advisable to take a break from those busy
schedules and just enjoy life. It is also important to know what truly makes
you happy and what truly matters. Try asking yourself the questions you have
been afraid to ask and discover yourself.
